Beginners Brewers Guide to Coffee Grind SizeÂ
For starters, grind size refers to how big or small the individual coffee particles are. Grind size is one of the main variables in determining how fast your coffee is brewed and how fast the flavor is extracted. You should choose grind size based on what brewing method you use.Â
Coarse Grind
- Similar in size to rock salt or small pebbles
- Ideal for methods with long extraction time such as: French press, percolators and cold brew
- Leads to slower extraction, resulting in bold and robust flavor with less acidity
Medium Grind
- Similar size to table salt or sand
- Ideal for drip coffee makers and pour overs
- Balances extraction time and offers a well rounded flavor profile. It has a good mix of acidity, body and aroma - making it a versatile option for various brewing methods
Fine Grind
- Similar size to powdered sugar or flour
- Ideal for espresso machines, Moka pots and Turkish coffee
- Quicker extraction due to the increased surface area. Result in a more intense and concentrated flavor, with a noticeable increase in acidity and a thicker, creamier texture

*We highly recommend that you grind your own beans. Coffee starts releasing chemicals and fragrance as soon as they are ground, so grind your beans right before you brew for the freshest coffee possible.Â
