Coffee 101
Arabica vs. Robusta
The two primary species of coffee are Arabica and Robusta. Arabica beans are known for their smooth & complex flavors and are generally considered higher quality. Robusta beans have a stronger; more bitter flavor & are often used in espresso blends.
Roast Levels
- Light Roast: Retains the most original flavor of the bean, with higher acidity and more pronounced origin characteristics.Â
- Medium Roast: Balances acidity with sweetness, offering a well-rounded flavor.Â
- Â Dark Roast: Features a more robust flavor with lower acidity, often highlighting the roasting process rather than the origin.Â
Single Origin
- What is it?: Single-origin coffee is sourced from one location, such as a specific country, region, or even a single farm. This contrasts with blends, which combine beans from multiple origins.
- Why Does It Matter?: Single-origin coffees allow you to experience the unique characteristics of a particular region. For example, Ethiopian coffees are often floral and fruity, while Brazilian coffees tend to have nutty, chocolatey notes.
Grind Size
Choosing the proper grind size for your brewing method is essential to get the most out of your coffee experience. To ensure a consistent grind size, we recommend using a Burr Grinder.
- Fine Ground: Similar in size to table salt. The finer grounds allow for a quick extraction process & and a strong cup. Typically used for making espresso.Â
- Medium ground: Similar in size to sand. The medium size grounds are perfect for drip coffee or a pour over.Â
- Coarse Ground: Similar in size to kosher salt. Coarse grounds are perfect for a french press or cold brew.
