Laotian Bamboo Dripper Brew Guide

Grind Size: Coarse Ground

Brew time: 4-5 minutes

Advantages: Imparts subtle flavors from the bamboo, Traditional and cultural artifact, and very eco friendly

What You'll Need:

  • Laotian bamboo dripper
  • Coarse ground coffee (preferably freshly ground)
  • Hot water (about 200°F or 93°C)
  • Kettle (preferably with a gooseneck for better control)
  • Mug or carafe (to catch the brewed coffee)
  • Scale or measuring cup (optional, for precision)
  • Stirring stick (optional)

Step-by-Step Brewing Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Bamboo Dripper:
    • Before the first use, rinse the bamboo dripper with hot water to remove any residual particles and to preheat it. This also helps to open up the natural fibers in the bamboo.
  2. Measure and Grind the Coffee:
    • Ratio: Use about 1 to 2 tablespoons of coffee per 6 ounces of water, or adjust according to taste. For more precision, use a ratio of 1:15 to 1:17 by weight (e.g., 1 gram of coffee to 15-17 grams of water).
    • Grind Size: Use a medium-coarse grind, similar to what you would use for a French press. This allows the water to flow through the coffee evenly.
  3. Set Up the Dripper:
    • Place the bamboo dripper over your mug or carafe. Make sure it is stable and ready to receive the coffee grounds.
  4. Add Coffee Grounds:
    • Place the ground coffee into the bamboo dripper. Spread the grounds evenly to create a flat bed for uniform extraction.
  5. Bloom the Coffee:
    • Pour a small amount of hot water over the coffee grounds, just enough to wet them. This is called blooming and allows the coffee to release trapped gases, enhancing flavor. Let it sit for about 30 seconds.
  6. Begin the Brew:
    • Slowly pour the hot water over the coffee grounds in a circular motion, starting from the center and moving outward. Pour steadily and evenly to ensure all the grounds are saturated.
    • Continue pouring until you reach your desired amount of coffee. The entire brewing process should take about 3 to 4 minutes.
  7. Let the Coffee Drip:
    • Allow the coffee to fully drip through the bamboo and into your mug or carafe. The natural filtration process might be slower than modern drippers, but it adds to the unique flavor profile.
  8. Serve and Enjoy:
    • Once the dripping has stopped, remove the bamboo dripper and serve the coffee. The bamboo dripper may impart a subtle, earthy flavor to the coffee, enhancing the overall experience.

Tips for the Best Laotian Bamboo Dripper Coffee:

  • Use Fresh Coffee: Freshly ground beans yield the best flavor. Try experimenting with different single-origin coffees to find the best match for this brewing method.
  • Water Quality: Use filtered water to avoid any impurities that might affect the taste of your coffee.
  • Care for the Dripper: Rinse the bamboo dripper with hot water after each use and let it dry thoroughly to prevent any mold or mildew from forming. Avoid using soap, as it can be absorbed by the bamboo.
