Coffee Description
This month's coffee comes from the Ulya Mill in the Jiwaka Province of Papua New Guinea, grown by smallholder producers around the Waghi Valley region. Sitting at 1,500–1,700 meters above sea level, this coffee benefits from volcanic loam soil, careful organic farming practices, and a full natural process, dried in the sun, that brings depth and complexity to the cup.
PNG is one of the most underexplored and challenged coffee origins, particularly in terms of supply chain. Farms here are small, often just a few acres, tended by individual producers and their families in remote areas with little infrastructure beyond picking and sorting cherries. Monpi Coffee Exporters is changing that, supporting more than 1,000 producers by investing in a centralized wet mill, local warehouses, and logistics near the town of Ulya — allowing farmers to focus on meticulous cherry sorting without the burden of investing in their own mill equipment. After purchase, cherries are floated to remove damaged and underripe seeds, then dried using improved infrastructure that helps consistently meet quality standards for moisture and water activity.
Expect a vibrant, layered profile with blueberry, plum, and spiced apple cider, rounded out by notes of rose, nutmeg, and chocolate.
